Discover US – Autumn Term 2016
Students from Hasland Hall joined other Year 9 students from across North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire at the launch day of a three-year programme to help them “Discover US”, run by the University of Sheffield.
The programme is aimed at young people who have the potential to go to university but may not yet see it as a priority. A launch evening was held in November for students and their parents followed by a December “orientation” day to help students find their way around the University site and start exploring the possibilities of Higher Education.
Grouped with students from other schools, North Derbyshire’s representatives quickly made new friends. Activities included a tour and research tasks leading to giving a lecture, quizzes and prizes.
“A great start!” was the verdict of the Hasland Hall students, who will have the chance to maintain links via the cohort Facebook page and re-new friendships at future events in April and into Years 10 and 11 – including an overnight stay next year in student accommodation.
